Shoutbox » Haiti events...

Hi all,

Together with a few friends I am working on putting together a mini-series of lectures and events at the University of London Union to highlight the plight of Haiti. Obviously, many people have come together with fantastic efforts in fundraising and there have been amazing displays of goodwill around London. We thought of adding to this by running a series of events to raise awareness rather than funds. Our goal is to try and keep the momentum going by informing people about how donations are being spent and elaborating on why Haiti's situation is as terrible as it is today.

We are right now looking for volunteer speakers, performers, workshop leaders, or even film suggestions that might fit into this programme. So far we have a couple of historical lectures planned, and we have invited several NGOs to come and discuss their work in the field.

Since I am lucky enough to be a part of this motivated group of youth activists, I thought I would make a shout out for any suggestions and ideas - and please let me know if you would like to get involved!

That is a good idea. You should invite someone who has been there to give first hand account of their experience.

Haiti was even before the incident a very challenging country from a development perspective.

Jozy Altidore is a football player of Haitian descent (plays for the USA). He is based in the UK - Hull - and could be worth trying to get to speak; having a Premier League footballer may raise the profile of your event. Plus he is 20 years old so it fits well with the youth angle of UYDO (although I realise this isn't a UYDO event!).

Altidore scored at the weekend and took his Haiti-flag wristband off kissing it, almost in tears - he is certainly feeling the pain of the tragedy and may want to get involved.
